Working at the heart of Australia’s energy transition, one fact kept standing out: battery chemistry was improving at an extraordinary rate everywhere except under the bonnet of your car. The lead-acid battery — invented in 1859 — is still the default, despite degrading rapidly in Australian heat and ending up as hazardous waste every few years.
Sodium-ion changes that. It delivers thousands of cycles instead of hundreds, thrives in heat, contains no lead, no sulfuric acid and no cobalt — and it drops straight into the battery tray your car already has. When the first generation of automotive-grade sodium-ion starter batteries reached mass production, we saw the opportunity to bring them to the market that needs them most: ours.
